I undid the string on the owl's leg, and poulled off the scrap of parchment. I stared down at it, trying to make out the words. They were blurred with water, and the ink had run down the page. I squinted, vaugly making out the words slowly but surely.

It's Megan, I have horrible news. Dad's dead. He died earlier today in a car crash. Mum says she'll be picking you up from school to live with us now, since she's not used to the muggle world, and will have a hard time paying for it and such. She says she'll come for you Thursday, so you should probably pack your things. I'm really sorry Leanne, really, I really am.

It took a few seconds for the shock to register. When it did, I swayed dizzily in the air, then tumbled onto the bed. My heart was pounding, and I didn't even bother to stop the tears that were leaking from my eyes. They trickled down my cheek, landing with a plop on my pillow. This couldn't be happening, this couldn't be happening, this couldn't be happening...I squeezed my eyes shut, trying to stay calm, This couldn't be happening...It's just a dream, of course it's a dream, it has to be a dream, why didn't I think of that eairlier? It's a dream, I know it, it's a dream, that makes perfect sense, it's a dream, because it has to be a dream. I'm only ten, it has to be a dream, it is a dream, oh god, please let it be a dream...IT'S A DREAM!!!!!! But as much as I tried to convince myself that, I knew it wasn't a dream. This was reality, I was sure of that.
